The BEAT-SCD Project is an interdisciplinary collaboration between Dr. Carlos Chirinos (NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development / Music and Audio Research Lab) and Dr. Emmanuel Peprah (NYU School of Global Public Health / ISEE Lab) that will explore the potential of music and storytelling to build trust, reduce stigma, and foster public engagement on Sickle Cell Disease to ultimately improve the lives of people living with this chronic disease.

Project activities will include:

  • Conducting a systematic review of the literature on music-based interventions for this population.

  • Assessing the knowledge, attitudes, and beliefs about sickle cell disease and exploring perceptions of the role of music in education, awareness, and coping related to the condition.

  • Fostering partnerships with a variety of stakeholders in the public health sector and the music industry.

This project is supported by an NYU Research Catalyst Grant.
